When Carly's mother, Moira phoned and asked Nora if Carly could spend a year with her, Nora was thrilled. Nora had been living alone for over seven years, and while she kept busy enough with her little job and minding the grandchildren she had nearby, Nora enjoyed Carly and saw in her, much of what Nora saw in herself.
During the conversation when Nora's daughter had first asked if Carly could stay with Nora, Nora heard about how Carly had had the idea of going to school in England for a year, and that she was tired of looking after her four younger siblings. "She just wants to spend sometime with you Mom." Moira had said. "Well I'll have Carly anytime Moira. Just make sure she brings some warm clothes. It gets so cold and damp here in the winter time." said Nora
"We'll make sure she has everything she'll need Mom."
