The time of Carly arrival at Nora's coincided with the first serious advances Mr. Pennington began making towards Nora. It was on the evening of the second month of Carly's stay that Mr. Pennington was locking up his shop and playing over in his mind how Nora would respond to his proposal.
"She'll say yes of course. I know she will. For who would refuse me. I'm a decent gentleman, never a cross word out of me. She can be sure of that. And we can live in her house if she likes or she can move with me into my flat above the store. I'm not fussy. Of course if we move into my flat, she'll have to sell her place, for it would make no sense to have the two places. And perhaps I can expand the shop."
