Post-secondary
Jan. 2011-present
Currently working on a PhD in Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (NRES). The focus of the research is on soil and sediment tracing using compound-specific stable isotopes (CSSIs). By looking at the stable isotopes of 13C and 12C found in specific fatty acids of plant origin.
The research covers a broad range of topics including, but not limited to:
  • Sampling methods and design
  • Processing and preparation of samples
  • Analysis of samples by gas chromatography (GC), elemental analyzer-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS), and GC-C (combustion)-IRMS
  • Modeling and data processing using MixSiAR
Sept. 2003-July 2006
Completed a Masters in Mathematical, Computer and Physical Sciences (Chemistry) with a focus on organic synthetic carbohydrate chemistry at UNBC. The objective of the research was to synthesize a tetrasaccharide which occurs in nature (rhamnogalacturonan I); a publication followed the successful completion of the research, with publication:
  • Reiffarth, D. and Reimer, K.B.; Synthesis of two repeat units corresponding to the backbone of the pectic polysaccharide rhamnogalacturonan I (2008), Carbohydrate Research, 343 (2), pp. 179-188.
Sept. 1993-Apr. 1998
Completed a BSc. in Chemistry at UNBC.
