way. "He's always thought too highly of himself." Pennington's wife would tell her friends. Although the word egotistical was not part of their vocabulary, it described Pennington to a T. Pennington believed others saw in him as a great man, a successful man, a man of the world, but ironically he was the only one who believed it.
"Well I had better knock then, hadn't I?" Thought Pennington when no one came to the door. "I was sure someone saw me coming up the walk, but there you are, the eyes are the first to go they say." Mr. Pennington used the doorknocker and gave it three good knocks. "Someone will be in this time of night, I'm sure of it. I know Nora gets in from work at six PM, and her granddaughter is in before her. Generally they don't go out on a Tuesday night so the pair of them should be home by now."
