A long and thunderous applause had already begun while Morozin was still finishing his translation. "Hooray for Harioto!" people shouted. "A medal
for Harioto!" others called out. "The Order of Lenin for Harioto," some wag
called out. That last remark caused a burst of hilarity, and people were wiping away tears. Hooray for Harioto! was repeated several more times. When
all the glasses were emptied, Ekaterina Efimovna, the Mayor and the Peoplešs
Deputy, rose slowly to her feet and then with a flick of her plump wrist
silenced the hall.
"Comrades!" she said
and looked sternly at Bondarenko who averted her eyes and reached for
the champagne bottle to fill his glass. "I say 'comrades' because," Catherine
the Great began anew, "we are all comrades here. Once more we are embarking
on a common cause, and thus we continue to be comrades, comrades in the
