this foreigner thinks he's a hero," Bellamy answered. There was a moment
of silence. Women had joined their men inside the toilet, straining to
see what had happened, all of them shouting and arguing about how many
foreigners were knifed, some shouting suggestions, someone else saying
that in the Soviet period, violence against foreigners was unheard of;
others stood silently. One man pushed through and wanted to use the urinal,
but Vera sent him outside.
"Where's your police?"
Bellamy asked.
"They are of no use in
such instances as this. Before our people were afraid of the authorities.
Now there is no authority and people have lost their scruples; they fear
nothing. We shall need to solve this ourselves," she said quietly.
