attacker lashed out at the man lying in the trough, but the downed man raised his arm in time to fend off that attack. The would­be assassin tore through the crowd in the doorway, and raced out.
Bellamy repeated Harioto's story for Vera. She asked Kostylev, the man who saved Harioto, if he could describe the attacker was, or if he had ever seen him in Blagoveshchensk. He may have been one of the waiters, although Kostylev could not absolutely certain. Vera asked Bellamy to relieve Kostylev while she examined his cut arm. She took Kostylev's shirt off, tore it, and used part of it to bandage his cut arm; the rest of it she tossed to Bellamy.
"Throw away the handkerchief and use his shirt," she ordered Bellamy. Kostylev was muttering something and shaking his head. "He feels embarrassed that a foreigner, and one who was their benefactor, was knifed, and that
