RELIGIONS

 

Hinduism
Approximately 82% of the people living in India are Hindus. Hinduism is an ancient religion that developed about five thousand year ago. Hinduism is characterized by the various Gods and Goddesses.

 

Islam
Muslims account for 12% of India's population. Muslims believe that there is only one God, Allah. Islam is based upon five pillars: declaration of faith, formal prayer, charity, fasting, and performing a pilgrimage to Mecca.

 

Christianity
Approximately 2.5% of the people living in India are Christian. Christianity emerged in India about two thousand years ago. Christians believe in the ten commandments of God.

 

Sikhism
Sikhism accounts for only 2% of India's population. It is a religion that was established by a man named Guru Nanak, born in 1469. Sikhs believe in the eleven gurus (teachers) of Sikhism.

 

Other religions of India are Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism and Judaism. Each of these religions account for less than 1% of India's population.
