The Wallace Monument

The Wallace Monument was opened in 1869 in memory of Scotland's famous warrior, William Wallace.  Wallace was a freedom fighter and lived from 1267-1305.  The monument sits atop Abbey Craig, a large crag overlooking the river.  It is here that Wallace stood to watch the English invaders gather on the southern side of the bridge, which he later burned.
