Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle is one of Scotland's grandest and most famous castles.  It overlooks the town of Stirling, as it sits atop an extinct volcano.  It was the strategic centre during Scotland's Wars of Independence during the 13th and 14th centuries and remained the home of many Stuart monarchs in the following centuries.  The first fortification on the site dates to the 11th century, and parts of the original structure still exist.

The outer wall and the city is below.
This building is called the "King's Old Building", but was originally called the "King's House".  It was built for James IV around 1496.  It sits on the highest point.
I took this picture while standing in the "Queen's garden".  Facing the old main gate.  The castle expanded, so eventually this gate led only to an inner courtyard, with the outer defences beyond.
