My life at Douglas College
I graduated from Thomas Haney Secondary in 2001. I was an avid
baseball player at the time and was offered a scholarship to play for the
Douglas College baseball team. I accepted and joined the school in
September of 2001. I was enrolled in the Criminology Program and
really had little idea of what to expect of the schooling or the baseball.
It turns out playing baseball at Douglas College is extremely intense.
We practiced a minimum of 3 days a week, we worked out in the weight room
twice, and usually played 5 games a week as well. On top of this
tremendous commitment, I was expected to be enrolled and pass a minimum of 9
credit hours per semester. Going to school and playing baseball both
required ample money, so I got a job and worked almost 20 hours a week on
top of school and baseball. I worked at the Bullpen Baseball School
for a man named Fred Sabatine. From my knowledge attained through
years of playing, I was hired as a hitting instructor and taught young
baseball players from ages 5-18. To visit the Bullpen, go to

As I said, baseball was crazy. The large coaching staff were all gung-ho on making each player the best he could be (I know it sounds like the army). One specific individual, Grant Matsuda, was especially dedicated to this philosophy. He was our conditioning coach, so after every, and I mean EVERY game or practice he was in charge of getting us into shape. We all ran a lot of miles for Mr. Matsuda. Wanna know more? Meet Grant Here. Aside from Matsuda, the other coaches: Gehrig Merritt, Graig Merritt, Terry Stein, Ray Chadwick, Craig Mosher, and Fred Sabatine were all extremely dedicated to each and every player's improvement as baseball players and as young, maturing adults. Baseball at Douglas are memories never to be forgotten. Check me out in action below on the left and my team picture on the right.
So you can see how crazy my life was playing baseball upwards of 30 hours a week, working upwards of 20, and finding time somewhere in there to study, eat, sleep and have some fun. |
