Black Solod

Solod represent the later stage in the development of solonetzic soils. Solodization has proceeded to an extent where the original Bnt horizon is undergoing degrdation to form the AB horizon. They are associated mainly with mesophytic grasses an d forbs in a sub-humid climate. They occur mainly in the Interior Plain regions of Alberta nd Saskatchewan. 

Selected properties:

1. Have a solonetzic Bnt horizon 

2. Have a distinct Ae at least 2 cm thick 

3. Must have an AB or BA at least 5 cm thick 

4. Black solods have Ah, Ahe or Ap with color values lower than 3.5 dry and chromas usually higher than 1.5 

5. No evidence of gleying in the upper 50 cm.
