Teaching.
I enjoy teaching. My passion for it
has not abated since I started fulltime teaching in 1985 at the University of Saskatchewan. Teaching is a great opportunity to share what I know with students. It allows me to relay to students a long long long story (the subject matter at hand!). I have no secret to teaching. My
personal approach involves essentially the following things: (1) being
involved and focused on the subject matter, (2) showing kindness and respect
to my listeners, and (3) to express things in as down-to-earth language as
possible (and proceed at a modest pace). That, in a nutshell, is my teaching philosophy (not very deep, mind you!).
Learning.
Understanding is an art. Learning and listening require effort, energy, and thinking. They are not easy, especially in technical areas. That is where most of the challenge lies. One of the grand purposes of higher education is to overcome this barrier to higher enlightenment. Unfortunately, I am not aware of a formula to help deal with this, but I think what will help are a disciplined commitment, a sense of curiosity, some degree of stubbornness to learn, and the willingness to spend lots of time learning. I am reminded of James Taylor's song the Walking Man. Just keep walkin! :-)
