of their conversation. Bellamy reached out to the cat; it sat up, as if
considering the invitation, and then lazily came near, sniffed Bellamy's
hand, and then turned its head so that he could scratch it behind the
ear. There were nightingales singing off in the wood.
"I just don't understand,"
said Bellamy with resignation.
"His is good sign," Morozin said. "But, to-night we dance, we sing. There
will be time to think and to may be understand."
As they were pushing their way into the hall, Bellamy called out, "Have you
faith, Boris? I mean religious faith." But Morozin did not answer. Nina was
waving to them.
Nina was sitting at
the table with Misha, the tall woman whom Bellamy saw in the railway yard
that afternoon, and another couple. Morozin introduced Bellamy.
