were now leaning forward,
sitting on the edge of their seats, earnestly waiting to hear what he was
about to say. He cleared his throat, reached for his glass again, raised it
high in a salute. "Ekaterina Efimovna!" he shouted. "Tovarishchy! Spasibo!"
To the mayor, to the comrades, thank you. And he downed his full glass.
Catherine the Great,
applauding madly, leapt to her feet and made for Bellamy. She was saying
something in an excited manner, and then clasping Bellamy's face, she
kissed him on the lips. "Molodets!" she shouted. She then turned
to shout something else to the dinner guests. They cheered in response.
Some even rose to their feet. Bellamy was waving and bowing in all directions.
When the cheering subsided, he sat down, grinning with satisfaction. Morozin
leaned over: "The mayor says you are a comrade and a true brother of the
labouring people," Morozin shouted over the persisten din.
