This
has been a particularly busy year for ROW-getting established
in the community and finding and encouraging writers and visual artists
to put their works on-line. I think ROW has been successful in
fulfilling its mandate to help new writers publish their works.
In
this edition, we are featuring a new writer from Fort St. John-Dante
Acuna. In fact, there seems to be an enormous amount of excellent creative
work coming out of the Fort St. John area. The folks at Northern Lights
College are doing an excellent job fostering their students' creativity.
When Frank Peebles dropped by the other day, he was surprised to find
so many writers that he hadn't seen before published in our archives.
It's extremely gratifying to know that we've been doing our job. And
the support we've received from artists has been absolutely fantastic-Susan
Herzog from MacKenzie has been particularly supportive. I can't say
how much I've appreciated her generosity and her sense of humour.
Our
second year is looking very promising. This issue is extremely versatile
in terms of style and genre-and the selections are of a very high quality
indeed. In March, ROW plans to add a new component to itself-a "spoken
word" category. If anyone out there is experimenting with aural performance,
be sure to send us your material. "Spoken word" is new, exciting-and
we have to capabilities to catalogue and preserve it. Another exciting
development has been the appearance of two new "underground" literary
publications and rumour has it that a writing school is going to be
established at Tumbler Ridge. Being a part of an upsurge in creative
activity in northern BC promises that ROW will be around for some time
to come-there is a need for it.
