The Newbie Guide: A Beginner's Guide to the Disc

Well, here it is folks. The Newbie Guide b1.0. Nothing too special and by no means complete, but here none the less. I've covered what I find to be pretty important stuff concerning primaries, as well as some other tidbits. If asked enough I'll put up the vital files from the Discworld help catalogue (even though they're listed online at the Discworld MUD site, but I guess putting them here would augment what I have now and make it look more special, but until then you can find the vital stuff here =)

What can be found there is information on the most important stuff, the commands that I had the most questions about from my early days on the Disc. If you have any more queries about stuff not covered here (or covered in Discworld help), email me with your question and I'll put it up in this part, depending on how important it is, what it's for, etc. Better yet, ask on the newbie channel for instant gratification =) One last thing: please, don't ask me about quests. Soxy has put up an excellent quest list here (however, these lists are illegal and using them is grounds for expulsion from the Disc). Please go to his quest list, as the information that can be obtained there is far better then what I can possibly give you =)

One last thing: To the oldbies who read these tips, please email me with your opinion as to what I could add and what could be taken out to enrich the experience for all of the lovable newbies =)

Onward to the Guide!

Guild selection

Guild selection is dependent on various things. The two things that are perhaps the most important are a) what you wanna do on the Disc, as well as b) what type of life suites your real life personality best.

For instance, if you're a person who likes to wear black and silently slink around in the shifting shadows, then go for either the Assassin's or Feef's Guild. If perhaps you're the type of person who enjoys chopping, hacking or hitting things ad naseum (spelling on that phrase?), you may consider the Warrior's Guild. If you like magic a lot and usually tend to play either a wizard or sorcerer character in computer RPGs or games such as D&D then I would definetly go for the Wizard's Guild. If you tend to like walking around healing or damaging people with the divine arts, then consider the priest's guild and worshipping one of the 7 gods or goddesses on the Disc (for more information on the priestly occupations visit Warrax's site). If you're of the finer gender of the human species and enjoy enchanting and helping people with miscellanious things (please, all witches out there correct me if I messed up your occupation =) then you may want to join the Witches Guild. On the other hand, you can just wander around the Disc as a member of the Adventurers Guild and remain as such, or wait for a bit and decide on a guild later.

Just as a note, all of the above things mentioned are not what each guild _just_ does. It does vary from person to person in each guild. It is best to ask around (to people, _not_ on the newbie channel =) as a first time player as to what guild to join. It's your choice =)

To the players considering a priestly life, I would go to Warrax's site right about now as the site is absolutely wonderful and has amazing amounts of information on the priest's guild and the gods, as well as a lot of other stuff =)

What skills to advance in the beginning

Well, now that you've selected your guild and have possibly gathered some xp (by doing quests, killing stuff), you can begin to advance your skills! This is perhaps one of the most fun points about the Discworld =) Personally, I suggest advance solely your primaries (the skills that are your guilds specialty, magic skills for wizards, covert for feefs, etc.) first, however other people believe that advancing your fighting first is the best way to go about doing bussiness.

Both points do have their merrets. If you advance your primaries first you will get guild commands quicker and raise your rating (ask about that on your talker channel), however, being able to kill stuff is very handy as well as it allows you to gather xp much faster. Personally I enjoy number chasing (raising my rating), but once I reach a certain point (10 days old and some better skills) I'm not going to number chase. This once again is dependent on your playing style and what you want to do. Ask your guild's talker channel, as well as some older characters for their opinions on advancing skills and your rating, etc. And remember... Have fnu!

Guild commands

Ah yes, guild commands. Not only are they good for collecting xp (which is good for you) but they also raise your rating (also good for you ;) These commands are well... commands that are unique to your guild *looks around* I think that may have been obvious ^^

The best place for information on your specific guild's guild commands is your guild talker. Yay talkers!

What not to kill in AM, KLK and CWC

AM: Everything is safe to kill, as far as I know, however, be sure to "consider" or "con" (for short) opponents before attacking them (this goes for all cities).

KLK: Cats and priests are a nono. Also, stealing is frowned upon in KLK.

CWC: Old people are not to be killed.

God selection

God selection. Some say it's worth, others say it's not. It all depends on what _you_ wanna do =)

First off, to worship a god you must go to their low or high alter (someone please email me to confirm which on it is =) and "worship" the god you'd like to worship.

One of the advantages to non-priest characters (however not wizzy or witch (for witches I'm not entirely sure) characters) is that after advancing your faith skills a little bit and entering the guild room in the temple of your god, you will be granted two rituals! One of the rits is cure light wounds and I'm not sure about other. Email me for the second ritual you get and if the rituals are different for each god. It's been a while since I was on the Disc ;) Once you're under worshipping the god of your choice, staying in alignment with them would be a good idea. To do this, kill things that are of the opposite alignment of you. If you're evil, kill good stuff, if you're good, kill evil stuff. Rather simple =) One warning: be wary of attacking a priest (especially in KLK). They have...oh, shall we say, friends =)

The Little Bit at the End

All in all, remember to have fun and be friendly. That's what the Disc is all about!
