When building it is important to remember that your layout matters. Making your building scattered will slow you down when making units but if attacked it will give you more time with your buildings all spread out. Bunching together units will allow for you to make units quickly, the enemy attacking will be able to precisely target a specific target in your base such as your gateways or tech tree. The best way to layout your base is to have your base not be set up into separate blocks but to be one continuous and harmonious flow of buildings, which may cause difficulty in units traveling out to attack.
