It is hard to not feel sad when you think about the tragic end of this band, so I ask you to raise your chin and thank God for what little we have. This album is one of the most powerful artistic pieces I feel I've ever laid my ears on. There is literally not a single aspect to this disc that falls short of awe inspiring. Full of alternating, aggressive, yet soulful vocals that glide over whirlwind riffs and sickly sweet melodies that I fear I may never hear (at least at this caliber) again. Acid Bath took an American death metal scene that was getting repetitive and stood it on its ear. They are one of the few American bands I feel had a crucial role in the rebirth of death metal, and alongside the European bands that were incorporating orchestral arrangements and keyboards to broaden death's sound, Acid Bath did the same, but did it in the opposite way. They stripped death down, at times slowing it to a Louisiana-like drawl, and made it more unclean. They added slow melodic passages that, even though they didn't seem to be trying, exuded evil and insanity personified by the Gacy clown adorning the cover. And they even added elements of hardcore and grind.
The lyrics on this album are amongst the most disturbing verbal images I've ever heard. And while at times they come across as juvenile and seem there only for shock value, for the most part they are truly poetic. Their beauty is only tainted by the underlying evil. Add this to music that seems to change complete shape from song to song. It's truly hard to believe that all of these songs are played and written by the same band. Almost every track is a classic to those who know this band. My favorites include: "God Machine," "Jezebel," "The Scream of the Butterfly," "Dr. Suess is Dead," and the climatic "Bones of Baby Dolls/Cassie Eats Cockroaches." And the reason I know that this is a truly special piece of work is that everyone I know had a different list of favorites. Yes this album is that complete.
