The Navajo-Hopi Land DisputeThe purpose of this website is to explain the history of the Navajo-Hopi land dispute. We wish to examine how this dispute has affected both Navajo and Hopi reserve lands, as their cultures and ways of life were threatened by the encroachment of the white settlers and United States government officials. Geographies of resistance and geographies of exclusion are also dealt with as both tribes resist against the encroachment and faced exclusion as a result of the lack of support and protection by the United States government. "Every inch of ground, all vegetation and the fauna on it are considered sacred. There are no places that are holier than others. There are so many stories that go with the land that it would take more than twenty years to tell them" (Evans, et al, 1993, p. 151). |
