COUNTER-STRIKE:
A Retrospective In Pictures;
A Comedy of Errors
In The Beginning...
It all started in March of 1999. Gooseman and I had talked
about working together on a new mod for Half-Life with a
Counter-Terrorism theme. First off, the mod needed a named. On
March 15th, I talked to Gooseman on icq about the subject of a
name for the mod. The proposed possibilities were
Counterrorism, Counter-Strike, Strike Force, fRAG HEADS,
Counter-Terror, Terrorist wars, Terror-Force, or Counter
Force.
"I like Counter-Terrorist Forces, myself" said
Gooseman (actual sentences taken from ICQ log). To which I
said "methinks it's a bit long... I think counter strike
is pretty cool" "I like that. Counter Strike..
Counter Strike it is." said Gooseman. The mod had a name.
A few weeks later after talking to Joost Schurr, we had a
home -- hosted at Planethalflife. On March 24, 1999, the web
site opened. The first update read: "You've somehow
stumbled upon the Counter-Strike mod for Half-Life web
site.." Things were pretty slow those first few weeks --
but we were happy to have a handful of people visiting the
site.
Three months later on June 19th, beta 1 of Counter-Strike
was released. After that came more betas, a site move, new
hosted sites, a boy named MTG,
and many other funny, embrarrasing, exciting, hilarious
events. So many events that it would be impossible to recount
them all.
