My
dual backgrounds in Education (UWO) and Physical Geography (UBC) have
allowed me to develop my interests in outdoor education, and enhancing
understanding of our environment. Though my many and varied work experiences
make it appear that "I can't hold a job", my contract work in
these areas has allowed me to develop and bring together a wide variety
of teaching, administrative and research skills that I will to use to
enhance the education stream of the CURA project. I joined UNBC's Geography
Program in 2001 as a Lab Instructor, managing lab space and teaching introductory
labs in Atmospheric Science, Earth Science, and Soil Science, after teaching
Physical Geography with the College of New Caledonia, and working as a
Teacher on Call with School District 57. Prior to this, I had worked as
the Regional Coordinator for the Science Council of BC and particularly
enjoyed community development work and projects that developed science
and technology interests for youth and young women. My first years in
Prince George were spent working with community groups, educators, and
students as a Museum Educator, developing and teaching experiential and
"hands-on learning" programs in environmental science and technology
areas. I also worked briefly as UNBC's Learning Skills Instructor, presenting
study and learning skills workshops and tutoring first year students.
Prior to arriving in Prince
George I lived in London Ontario for 4 years, where I completed my teaching
degree, and worked extensively with their school district's Alternative
Parent Participating London Elementary program. Through this experience
I worked in multi-age classes, developing independent learning activities,
working with a wide range of student abilities, assisting with overnight
multli-day outdoor education programs, and advocating for the program
with the local school district. My background also includes assisting
with a number of atmospheric research projects and work in my original
home town, Vancouver, with UBC as a Physical Geography Lab Demonstrator.
I am interested in improving
understanding of the natural environment through applied learning and
maintain a strong interest in education through my work as a Facilitator
with the Habitat Conservation Trust Fund's Wild BC Education programs.
