Textbook(s): LINEAR ALGEBRA WITH APPLICATIONS by W. Keith Nicholson (7th edition); PARTIAL SOLUTIONS MANUAL (optional). My notes will be available online. A hard copy of the entire set of notes can be purchased from the copy store (the price is just the price of copying).

Course Content
(section references are to the text): We will cover the following.

Chapter 1. Systems of Linear Equations: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3

Chapter 2. Matrices and Transformations: 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5

Chapter 3. Determinants and Diagonalization: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3

Chapter 4. Vector Geometry: 4.1, 4.2, 4.3

Chapter 5. The Vector Space of n-tuples: 5.1, 5.2, 5.4, 5.5

Homework: Homework will be assigned regularly. Each homework assignment consists of several parts. The best strategy would be to work on the corresponding part immediately after it is assigned. Note that, in each homework, only four questions will be marked for credit. The due date of each assignment will be announced in class, usually 3-7 days earlier and will be posted at the course web site. The homework assignments are due in class, not later than the end of the class on the due date. No late assignments will be accepted for marking. Solutions and answers will be posted immediately after the due date of the assignment at the course web page.

Note: Linear Algebra is traditionally a difficult subject. If you want to give yourself the best chances of success in this course, be prepared to work lots of examples.  Most students will find that they will need to spend a large number of out of class hours reading the notes and examples from the text, and doing the homework problems. Lecture attendance is essential for good performance in this course.

Evaluation
:

Midterm I (Fri, Feb 10): 20%
Midterm II (Fri, Mar 10): 20%
Final Exam: 45%

Other Resources for the Course: The students are encouraged to visit the Academic Success Centre (10-2584) and inquire about the various options for help with this course (check www.unbc.ca/asc for more information), or visit the Mathematical Academic Centre of Excellence (10-2088), where they can discuss mathematics with other fellow students and support staff and work on their assignments. If there are students in this course who, because of disability, may have a need for special academic accommodations, please come and discuss this with me, or contact staff at the Access Resource Centre (arc@unbc.ca) located in the Teaching and Learning Centre, Room 10-1048 on the main campus (check www.unbc.ca/arc for more information). Students can also call the ARC at (250) 960-5682. Regional students can call the Centre toll-free at 1-888-960-5682 .
