Universal Tree of Life

 

The above image is a phylogenetic tree of a diverse group of organisms from each of the three domains that we have been talking about.  Try to find the three microorganisms that we have been investigating in each of the three domains.  Notice that the lengths of the branching indicates how closely related one genus is to another.  All life on earth falls into one of these three domains, as a result this diagram is highly simplified.

 

The diagram above is what evolutionary biologists call a cladogram.  It was stated before that Saccharomyces cerevisiae is part of the Kingdom Fungi.  The cladogram expands to show all the phyla that are within the Kingdom Fungi, including the phylum Ascomycota which Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a part of.
