I have a number of interests that overlap with my academic life.  These mainly involve drawing.  I have done both Scientific Illustration and cartooning.

I have been cartooning ever since I can remember, and it was the first profession I chose for myself (this is no lie, I have a kindergarten book somewhere professing that I wanted to be a cartoonist when I grew up).

Somewhere along the way, I seem to have gotten sidetracked into Science.  Luckily, I also find this very interesting, and my profession is full of people wanting cartoons for talks and posters so I always get opportunity to doodle.  That way I will be ready when my big break comes and I can quit my day-job!

In the meantime, I have had several outlets for my creative urges.  I Illustrate and paint when I can.
I had a regular panel cartoon in the Science Newspaper at UBC when I was an undergraduate.  The series was called I.N. Stein, and ran  bi-weekly for four years (when I remembered to submit things).

The cartoons were science related, and range from physics, math, chemistry and biology, to general themes about university.  My brother-in-law, Doug Craigen, has amended some of these illustrations into his Physics Humor page

Lately, I have been cartooning for the ISBE Newsletter, with the focus of the cartoons being in animal behaviour.

One of my current projects is working with Doug on a series of children's stories for the internet.  This is called the Eureka series, which center around famous scientists, and hopefully teach a little as well as entertain.  So far we have one full story (Archimedes and the Crown) completed, and one written and partially illustrated (Archimedes and the Roman Army).  This has taken a bit of a hiatus while Doug and I have been busy sorting out things like 'jobs', but we were very excited when Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics asked if they could use the illustrations to Archimedes and the Crown for one of their instructional videos for teachers called "Essential Science for Teachers".  If you manage to get a copy, it is in Video 6 - Rising and Sinking!
