Evaluating Species Distribution Models - Working with colleagues at the University of Alberta, I am building on previous research designed to assess the sensitivity and uncertainty of species distribution models to error and bias in source data and choices in model design and structure.  We are currently looking at one type of species distribution model, a resource selection function (RSF), and developing an improved method for evaluating the validity of model predictions.  We also are assessing the influence of data contamination on model predictions for used vs. availability sampling strategies.

Effects of Disturbance on the Abundance of Mtn. Caribou - Dr. Dale Seip, of the BC Ministry of Forests, and I, are using resource selection functions and population survey data to estimate the number of endangered mountain caribou displaced from a late winter range frequented by recreational snowmobilers.  This study will provide further insight into the relationship between species occurrence and abundance and provide direction to recovery planning efforts for mountain caribou.
