Classes

The courses have taught or am currently teaching are outlined below (see UNBC Programs and Courses for current schedule).  Unless otherwise noted, students enrolled in the courses should access course content through WebCT.

CHEM 204 : Introductory Biochemistry

A lecture-based course designed to present an introductory sequence of  biochemistry.  This course focuses on the structure, composition and role of proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids in living systems, and includes the nature and function of enzymes.  In addition it covers the principles of bioenergetics and the major metabolic pathways and their regulation in animals and plants.

CHEM 220 : Organic and Biological Chemistry

A lecture-based course designed to present an introductory sequence of organic chemistry and biochemistry. An understanding of organic chemistry is required to properly understand biochemistry. This course treats organic chemistry in enough depth to make biochemistry understandable.

BCMB 306 : Intermediary Metabolism (Previously CHEM 306)

A lecture-based course emphasizing the importance of biochemical pathways and macromolecules in physiological systems. Topics include metabolism of amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, nucleotides and how these metabolic pathways are interrelated at the tissue and organ levels.

BCMB 307 : Proteins (Previously CHEM 307)

A lecture-based course designed to provide in-depth knowledge on contemporary protein biochemistry, and its applications. Major topics include structure and function of proteins, protein purification, protein metabolism, protein biotechnology, and proteomics.

BCMB 402: Macromolecular Structure (Previously CHEM 405-Structural Biochemistry)

A lecture-based course designed to provide in-depth discussions on molecular structure determination, including  X-ray crystallography and NMR.

Previously taught courses:

CHEM 255: Introductory Biochemistry Laboratory

CHEM 308: Biochemistry Lab II
