Castle
Creek Glacier, BC
Castle Creek Glacier (53° 2.2' N., 120º 24.4' W.) is a
9.4 km2 mountain
glacier in the Cariboo Mountains of British Columbia, Canada.
Castle Creek Glacier is officially unnamed, and is also referred
to locally as Roberts Glacier. It is located about
25 km
southwest of McBride and can be accessed on foot via the Avalanche
Valley Trial. Castle Creek Glacier flows to
the north-northeast for 6.3 km from an upper elevation of 2,827 m to
the current terminus at 1,810 m.We (Western Canadian Cryospheric Network and UNBC) began monitoring Castle Creek Glacier mass balance, surveying surface height change, and measuring length change in August 2007. These field studies of Castle Creek Glacier are the first of any glacier in the Cariboo Mountains. We hope to continue monitoring Castle Creek Glacier change as a key benchmark glacier for this relatively unstudied region of western Canada. Castle Creek Glacier is unique and globally significant, forming annual moraines each year since 1959! From this incredible record we have reconstructed the longest, ongoing record of glacier length change in North America. For further information see our page introducing the Castle Creek Glacier record and see this UNBC news release. |
